Runners in Recovery With Bob Balfour

This week's podcast finds Coach Blu speaking with Bob Balfour, a pillar in his community, working his way through life by serving others who have been affected by addiction, are pursuing recovery, and building bridges between law enforcement and the recovery community.

Bob speaks about his childhood, situational issues through family systems that sidetracked his progression. Bob comes with a powerful history of seeing both sides of addiction, the consequences, and redemption. He talks about going from addict to ultrarunner and Ironman. Then turning his attention to health and wellness through running, coaching, and building others to do the same. Bob has truly become Boston-strong.

Bob is a storyteller, and as you listen to his life, you'll understand why he was also able to build a relationship with Coach David Clark, as Bob was a crucial mentor through David's Boston quad experience.

Great Leaders Live Like Drug Addicts by Michael Brody-Waite

In this week's podcast Coach Blu speaks with Michael Brody-Waite, entrepreneur, author, TedX speaker, and person in long-term recovery. Listen as Michael describes life as an addict, spending every waking hour doing whatever it took to stay high, including stealing from my friends and family.

Michael describes taking a chance on himself and seeing that his addiction didn't have to be a death sentence, in fact, it could be utilized to create an unstoppable force. Michael moves from addict to entrepreneur and leader. As many of you on Team Addict to Athlete understand, to turn the mess into a message you only need to flip the script. Use the same energy in a positive light thus producing amazing outcomes. In his book 'Great Leaders Live Like Drug Addicts', you will hear that your addiction does not have to dictate your future. It's time to use the same energy for positive outcomes, rather than the negative aspects of active addiction. You have the power to become an agent of recovery.

Intentional Walk by Corey Harrington

An intentional walk occurs when the defending team elects to walk a batter on purpose, putting him on first base instead of letting him try to hit. Intentional walks -- which count as a walk for the hitter and a walk allowed by the pitcher -- are an important strategy in the context of a game. They can be used to put a runner on first base, setting up a potential double play.

Listeners, today's podcast features Corey Harrington an inspiring man who had aspirations of playing professional baseball and due to some unfortunate experiences, made it as far as the minor league. But his story didn't end there. Listen as Coach Blu and Corey talk about the secrecy of addiction and the fear of letting other people know. Then intentionally walking into recovery by choosing to let others in. Personal accountability, a healthy dose of trust, and Corey has now been able to turn the mess into a message. Corey shares his story on athlete to addict to athlete and ultimately Ironman.

The Gold Medal of Recovery with Carrie Steinseifer Bates

In this week's podcast Coach Blu speaks with Carrie Steinseifer Bates, a 3-time Gold Medal Olympic Swimmer having competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles California. Listen as she describes life just below the waterline, growing up in an alcoholic home, and how she used the freedom of the pool to escape the world, discovering the water as a safe place where she would work out her fears, frustrations, and a good place to work out emotions because “No one can see you cry under the water”.

Following her 1984 Olympic success, Carrie missed qualifying for the 1988 Olympics. As that chapter closed she continued to progress in College, swimming, and coaching, starting a family, and becoming a mother. Unfortunately, addiction also began to take a stronghold and as she describes it, "distracted her from what her true and authentic purpose was".

Listen as she describes her recovery in aspects of several treatment episodes and then coming to an awakening that she faced and knew the only way to genuine recovery and sobriety would be laid upon the foundations of honesty. With multiple treatment episodes under her belt, like false starts on an Olympic journey of recovery, she finally learned and ultimately took the dive into understanding, emotional balancing, and overcoming adversity where she became the woman and mother she had always wanted to be. After 18 years absent from the water she took the plunge again and became an Ironman triathlete. Carrie says, “True Champions never let the fire inside them die out”, and she is an example of what can happen if you truly want to go for gold in recovery.

Today she continues to maintain an active lifestyle and has found her true calling in assisting those on the starting blocks of sobriety by working at Hazleden Betty Ford in Oregon. This is a podcast not to be missed, as you will feel the passion she has for life noticed after gold in the Olympics but also, life after addiction.

Remembering Superman

Athletes, today we are dropping a very special episode. This was the very first interview I was able to do with the late Coach David Clark in 2017. Having thought this episode was lost when our former platform Pod Bash moved to the Radio Ronan network, I was happy to have found this episode and relive the chemistry, content, and friendship that developed from this meeting. In the short time, we were able to know David he taught us a lot about life, sobriety, and of course living every moment as if it's your last.

We lost Coach David Clark following a surgery he had last May. February 5, 2021, would have been Coach Clark's 50th birthday. What a fitting tribute to be able to re-experience the relationship we had with Coach Clark. Listen and enjoy as we discuss so many of the founding principles Addict to Athlete has come to know.

David shares his story of recovery from alcohol. He shares how he went from a 320lb alcoholic to ultra runner, coach, vegan, and sober warrior.
