Disney On The Rocks

On today's podcast Coach Blu take a deep dive into his experience while attending a mental health and addiction conference in Orlando Florida. Following the conference, he was able to attend Walt Disney World Epcot theme park and was absolutely blown away by how much drinking of alcohol had become part of the Disney experience. After a 40-year absence of alcohol within the Disney theme park experience, 10 years ago wine and beer were introduced and now, September 2022, new park rules allow the spirits to openly flow. Listen as he discusses some of his thoughts and what he discovered from Walt Disney himself about why he would not allow the consumption of alcohol in his parks originally. Become informed about what you should be aware of before you book a family experience to a location like this and what you should know about potential triggers before you invest in Disney resorts for your next family vacation.

**Clarification on Disney lobbying to lower drinking age at Disney parks. We have found that to be misinformation-https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/disney-world-drinking-age/

Addiction in the Elderly Population

Today's podcast we invite back Dr. B, Faried Banimahd, M.D., CEO of American Addiction Institute of Mind and Medicine. They discuss the growing issue of substance use and misuse among the elderly (adults over the age of 60), particularly of alcohol and prescription drugs, as one of the fastest-growing health problems in the United States. Addiction in the elderly population can be extremely serious. Listen as they discuss prescription drug abuse and the misuse of prescribed medicines where they may abuse their own medicine in a way that is not instructed by the doctor, or more than is necessary. Listen to tips for conversations and ways you can raise a concern without hindering or hurting the relationship.

The aging of the American population has created a sense of urgency among long term care (LTC) providers as they begin to realize the scale of substance use and misuse among older adults. Between 2006 and 2020 rates of diagnosed substance use disorder (SUDs) among older adults was projected to more than double from 2.8 million to 5.8 million. This trend is likely to continue over the next 20 years inline with continued growth in the number of Americans 60 years or older.

The Gold Medal of Recovery with Carrie Steinseifer Bates

In this week's podcast Coach Blu speaks with Carrie Steinseifer Bates, a 3-time Gold Medal Olympic Swimmer having competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles California. Listen as she describes life just below the waterline, growing up in an alcoholic home, and how she used the freedom of the pool to escape the world, discovering the water as a safe place where she would work out her fears, frustrations, and a good place to work out emotions because “No one can see you cry under the water”.

Following her 1984 Olympic success, Carrie missed qualifying for the 1988 Olympics. As that chapter closed she continued to progress in College, swimming, and coaching, starting a family, and becoming a mother. Unfortunately, addiction also began to take a stronghold and as she describes it, "distracted her from what her true and authentic purpose was".

Listen as she describes her recovery in aspects of several treatment episodes and then coming to an awakening that she faced and knew the only way to genuine recovery and sobriety would be laid upon the foundations of honesty. With multiple treatment episodes under her belt, like false starts on an Olympic journey of recovery, she finally learned and ultimately took the dive into understanding, emotional balancing, and overcoming adversity where she became the woman and mother she had always wanted to be. After 18 years absent from the water she took the plunge again and became an Ironman triathlete. Carrie says, “True Champions never let the fire inside them die out”, and she is an example of what can happen if you truly want to go for gold in recovery.

Today she continues to maintain an active lifestyle and has found her true calling in assisting those on the starting blocks of sobriety by working at Hazleden Betty Ford in Oregon. This is a podcast not to be missed, as you will feel the passion she has for life noticed after gold in the Olympics but also, life after addiction.

Remembering Superman

Athletes, today we are dropping a very special episode. This was the very first interview I was able to do with the late Coach David Clark in 2017. Having thought this episode was lost when our former platform Pod Bash moved to the Radio Ronan network, I was happy to have found this episode and relive the chemistry, content, and friendship that developed from this meeting. In the short time, we were able to know David he taught us a lot about life, sobriety, and of course living every moment as if it's your last.

We lost Coach David Clark following a surgery he had last May. February 5, 2021, would have been Coach Clark's 50th birthday. What a fitting tribute to be able to re-experience the relationship we had with Coach Clark. Listen and enjoy as we discuss so many of the founding principles Addict to Athlete has come to know.

David shares his story of recovery from alcohol. He shares how he went from a 320lb alcoholic to ultra runner, coach, vegan, and sober warrior.

Being A Child Of An Alcoholic And Addict

Today Coach Blu speaks with Team Captain and Athlete Holly Davies. Listen as Coach Blu and Holly open up about being the child of an alcoholic and addict in the family system. Children of alcoholics and addicts often have to deny their feelings of sadness, fear, and anger in order to survive. Since unresolved feelings will always surface eventually, they often manifest during adulthood. Listen as they discuss similarities between what they both learned growing up in a home where addiction was so prevalent. There are many ways that children of alcoholics or children of an addict navigate the family system and when the right principles are applied, can break the cycle of addiction for their own family. Athlete Davies gives amazing insight into what it's like growing up in such a home and then, watching the healing process begin. There is forgiveness, understanding, and accountability that is learned and can be heard as she says, "Being a child of an addict is part of my story. It doesn't define who I am." This is an amazing opportunity for anyone who struggled with addiction and their family system to know how it affects the children.
