Ultrarunner Taylor Spike

Oregonian Taylor Spike added his name to the very short list of ultra-endurance athletes to complete a sub-60 hour, 200-mile ultramarathon. For Taylor, running is about life — and life is about submitting to the friction necessary to get uncomfortable. Comfort is hiding after a lousy day at work to bust into a case of beer. Comfortable is overweight. Comfortable is Dilaudid, a buzz, and a couch. There was a time in Taylor’s life when he went through the motions of addiction to cope. "I didn’t have a pill problem, I had a pain problem". Back surgeries and a gut left him uninspired and lethargic.

In the suffering of the long run, he finds his family and his truth. “I was quick to look for the easy out,” according to Taylor, who at the time was trapped in the spiral of routine, but which ultimately spun into a self-destructive path chasing numbness and a false high. When a second surgery was required for his back, he was already walking down that road. Alone. When the second round of therapy and pain management was heaped on his plate, Taylor expected help and accountability. He hoped again to skate through riding the easy out. Life was not gritty, raw, or real.

What he found instead was a heavy dose of self-accountability and a hard look in the mirror. No one offered to do the heavy lifting for him, and he realized that no one could alter the map of his life besides himself. There are prisons we lock ourselves in that we hold the only key to. “We all go through life avoiding confrontation,” he says. Even conflict within ourselves.

Listen to this podcast with Coach Blu and Taylor. See if you can relate to anything said here, and make sure to share the word with others! We can all recover. "I am a CHAMPION!"

An Accidental Activist: Ed Bisch

Coach Blu speaks to Ed Bisch and his battle with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family concerning OxyContin on this week's podcast. Listen as Ed talks about February 2001, when his life was blindsided as he learned his 18-year-old son Eddie was found unresponsive in his bed. Questing some of his son's friends, he learned that OxyContin had been used unbeknownst to it posed. Police on the scene told Ed that local kids were dying from “Oxy” and the situation worsened. The drug, they said, was spreading quickly across the country and already causing chaos locally.

Bisch has sounded alarms about the dangers of opioids now for more than 2 decades. As the founder of Relatives Against Purdue Pharma (RAPP), he attended countless public hearings, trials, and protests and is a claimant in a class-action lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company, the creators of Oxy. Listen as he describes his lifelong battle for Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family to take responsibility for stealing one out of the millions of lives their medication has taken from loved ones.

Bisch’s activism got him noticed by others fighting against opioid abuse, including Beth Macy, author of “Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America.” Macy wrote about Bisch in her latest book, “Raising Lazarus: Hope, Justice, and the Future of America’s Overdose Crisis.”

Substance Use Disorder and Their Impact on Community

On this week's episode, Coach Blu was invited to sit on a panel at the University of Utah with Randall Carlisle from Odyssey House recovery, a former TV news acre, and Evan Done of USARA. This community recovery connection organization helps people find resources and training in recovery. Listen as they answer a student leadership board questions on how addiction recovery and addiction services are rendered in our community. It is incredible to see the differences and similarities and how addiction recovery is handled in Utah.

This panel discusses the following questions; What is a substance use disorder? What is the accessibility like for low-income folks to treatment? What might this look like for unsheltered individuals? How might mental health impact substance use? What does substance use look like on college campuses? How might stress exacerbate substance use disorders? What could these stressors look like? How do incarcerated people access treatment for substance use and what does that process look like? How have you seen how the stigma around substance use affects caregivers and those receiving treatment?
How can parents, educators, and leaders in our communities work towards addressing substance use disorders and supporting those affected by them?

Reflections of Healing with James Yount

James Yount comes from a family of addiction and a history of trauma. He struggled with anger, addiction, overeating, and suicidal ideation. In 2020 he decided he didn't recognize the reflection in the mirror and flushed all his dope. A few months later, he set a goal to do the dishes and take his dog for a daily walk. He has been clean and sober since that first day and has now lost 155 lbs in the last 18 months.

James says, "I know if I stay here, I will become comfortable, and being comfortable is what led me to being uncomfortable. There is a difference between discomfort and pain. I don't want to go back to the pain, but I don't mind the discomfort. Discomfort is what makes a diamond. Discomfort is what makes a pearl. Discomfort has lead me to the growth I am experiencing today."

It is essential not to take any waking moment for granted. Be introspective and self-aware to be able to change. Early behaviors are learned, so they can be unlearned. What are your coping mechanisms?

This is a fantastic episode you don't want to miss. Follow James on Instagram. James has a goal to start a faith-based fitness recovery center in time.

Public Defenders Perspective On Addiction

Listen as Coach Blu interviews a public defender and prosecutor on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. F. Wilson Myers, ESQ. is a Tribal Public Defender. He has worked for forty years as an attorney. He served in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Alabama as a Public Defender. Wilson says, "No one chooses to be an addict. I am here to help them work through the consequences."

Stephen Mackenzie, ESQ. is a Harvard graduate. He has been a criminal Defense attorney for 15 years and a Public attorney for 15 yrs. He is now a tribal prosecutor. He has worked on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming and now the Uintah and Quray Reservation in Utah. Stephen believes addiction is a disease, not a crime.

Both these gentlemen work to focus on individual sentences that fit the defendant. They want to use rehabilitation to help defendants but understand that sometimes jail is a needed deterrent consequence. Their views on addiction are progressive and an excellent sign for Utah and further. These viewpoints will help us address addiction on a larger scale and work to decriminalize substance abuse which is essential to long-term changes and recovery.

One on One with Coach Blu: Take Control Of Your Own Pain

Is pain a recipe for a catastrophe? Often pain and trauma create addiction. Many become addicted to opioids due to emotional pain because the painkiller of opiates also takes away emotional pain as well as physical pain. Coach and Marissa talk about how to communicate and recognize pain. Moving pain to healing can take a massive amount of knowledge.

Locate the pain on the inside and work on self-awareness. Emotional pain can be healed with work. Coach Blu says, "The cycle of addiction is never broken until you make the conscious effort to do it." It's time to take control of your pain.

Exercising Recovery with Nicole Golden

Today Coach Blu speaks to Nicole Golden who is a NASM Master Trainer, CES, BCS, FNS and AFAA certified group fitness instructor and Master of Science in Applied Exercise Science/Sports Nutrition.  Nicole shares the research and the importance of using exercise in your recovery. We all know exercise is a powerful depression fighter for several reasons. Most importantly, it promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression and addiction.

Exercise can be a valuable medicine in the treatment of substance use disorders. Learn about the effectiveness of exercise as an adjunct therapy for drug/alcohol use disorders in this episode. Find out more about her business https://fwfwellness.com

Disney On The Rocks

On today's podcast Coach Blu take a deep dive into his experience while attending a mental health and addiction conference in Orlando Florida. Following the conference, he was able to attend Walt Disney World Epcot theme park and was absolutely blown away by how much drinking of alcohol had become part of the Disney experience. After a 40-year absence of alcohol within the Disney theme park experience, 10 years ago wine and beer were introduced and now, September 2022, new park rules allow the spirits to openly flow. Listen as he discusses some of his thoughts and what he discovered from Walt Disney himself about why he would not allow the consumption of alcohol in his parks originally. Become informed about what you should be aware of before you book a family experience to a location like this and what you should know about potential triggers before you invest in Disney resorts for your next family vacation.

**Clarification on Disney lobbying to lower drinking age at Disney parks. We have found that to be misinformation-https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/disney-world-drinking-age/
