AIIA Minor League with Savannah Robinson: Moving Forward and Glancing Back

Today's episode is for our Minor League (18 and under). Savannah is Coach Blu's 17 yo daughter. On this episode she and Coach Blu discuss moving forward and glancing back and how they are complementary actions that shape our journey through life. She hosts this episode to discuss teen issues. Moving forward represents our constant drive to grow, evolve, and embrace new experiences. It is the propulsion that propels us towards our goals and aspirations, pushing us beyond our comfort zones. Moving forward allows us to learn from our past, make necessary adjustments, and seize opportunities for personal and professional growth. On the other hand, glancing back is an essential reflection of our past experiences. It enables us to acknowledge our accomplishments, learn from our mistakes, and gain wisdom from the lessons life has taught us. Glancing back provides us with a broader perspective, helping us appreciate our journey and make informed decisions for the future. Balancing both moving forward and glancing back allows us to navigate our path with intention, resilience, and continuous self-improvement.

Minor League: Navigating Relationships

The Minor League podcast is hosted by 17-year-old Savannah Robinson and her father and therapist Coach Blu Robinson. Anyone can benefit from this podcast. This teen and father duo bring a great unique, and informative perspective to many topics. They often address communication, teen issues, parent-child relationships, and confidence.
This week Savannah has guest Coach Blu in the studio to talk about navigating relationships. Relationships in the teenage years can be quite volatile. What is love and the different forms? Why is it important to love yourself before loving anyone else? They discuss this and more about how all relationships can be challenging but beneficial if you put in the work.

Ultrarunner Taylor Spike

Oregonian Taylor Spike added his name to the very short list of ultra-endurance athletes to complete a sub-60 hour, 200-mile ultramarathon. For Taylor, running is about life — and life is about submitting to the friction necessary to get uncomfortable. Comfort is hiding after a lousy day at work to bust into a case of beer. Comfortable is overweight. Comfortable is Dilaudid, a buzz, and a couch. There was a time in Taylor’s life when he went through the motions of addiction to cope. "I didn’t have a pill problem, I had a pain problem". Back surgeries and a gut left him uninspired and lethargic.

In the suffering of the long run, he finds his family and his truth. “I was quick to look for the easy out,” according to Taylor, who at the time was trapped in the spiral of routine, but which ultimately spun into a self-destructive path chasing numbness and a false high. When a second surgery was required for his back, he was already walking down that road. Alone. When the second round of therapy and pain management was heaped on his plate, Taylor expected help and accountability. He hoped again to skate through riding the easy out. Life was not gritty, raw, or real.

What he found instead was a heavy dose of self-accountability and a hard look in the mirror. No one offered to do the heavy lifting for him, and he realized that no one could alter the map of his life besides himself. There are prisons we lock ourselves in that we hold the only key to. “We all go through life avoiding confrontation,” he says. Even conflict within ourselves.

Listen to this podcast with Coach Blu and Taylor. See if you can relate to anything said here, and make sure to share the word with others! We can all recover. "I am a CHAMPION!"

Reflections of Healing with James Yount

James Yount comes from a family of addiction and a history of trauma. He struggled with anger, addiction, overeating, and suicidal ideation. In 2020 he decided he didn't recognize the reflection in the mirror and flushed all his dope. A few months later, he set a goal to do the dishes and take his dog for a daily walk. He has been clean and sober since that first day and has now lost 155 lbs in the last 18 months.

James says, "I know if I stay here, I will become comfortable, and being comfortable is what led me to being uncomfortable. There is a difference between discomfort and pain. I don't want to go back to the pain, but I don't mind the discomfort. Discomfort is what makes a diamond. Discomfort is what makes a pearl. Discomfort has lead me to the growth I am experiencing today."

It is essential not to take any waking moment for granted. Be introspective and self-aware to be able to change. Early behaviors are learned, so they can be unlearned. What are your coping mechanisms?

This is a fantastic episode you don't want to miss. Follow James on Instagram. James has a goal to start a faith-based fitness recovery center in time.

Listener Q&A: Are You Cross Addicting?

On this week's podcast, the Agents answer listener questions and share their insights into cross-addiction, offer advice on how to stay focused in your recovery, and set up a powerful topic for next week's show.

Cross addiction, also known as addiction transfer or Addiction Interaction Disorder. It is when a person has two or more addictive behaviors. The addictions can include alcohol or other drugs, but can also include addictions to food, gambling, sex, gaming or other compulsive behaviors.

Addiction is the continued use of a substance or engagement in a behavior despite the potential for personal problems, harm and negative consequences. For example, consider a gambling addiction. If you continue to gamble to the point that you can no longer pay your bills, you lose your car or damage relationships, you may have an addiction.

Developing Your Recovery Plays

In this week's episode, the Agents talk about the plays you need to make in order to maintain your forward recovery progress. When dealing with a substance abuse disorder, it may seem like there’s no easy escape. Most of these disorders are related to other mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, both of which are difficult to treat or even talk about. Even if you manage to become sober, triggering situations can drive you right back to substance abuse, which can make your odds of long-term recovery seem impossible. Learn how making a plan, calling plays, and learning from your past will help you in your own field of battle!
